Plugs for the Prairies: Hazel Bird

Help restore rare prairie habitat in the Rice Lake Plains! Historically, the Rice Lake Plains were covered with tall grass prairies and oak savannah, which were dominated by massive black and white oak, grasses like big bluestem and switchgrass thrived and a diverse range of wildflowers blossomed. Today, the oak savannah and tall grass prairie of the Rice Lake Plains are badly fragmented and overgrown with non-native species. Help give this globally rare habitat a comeback by planting native prairie species plugs on our Hazel Bird Nature Reserve.

Join the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) and the Peterborough Astronomical Association (PAA) in an exploration of the night sky.
Start the evening off with equipment demonstrations and displays, then enjoy an ‘Astronomy 101’ presentation in the Great Hall of the Ganaraska Forest Centre before venturing back outside to try your hand at searching the dark sky with members of the PAA.
The fee to participate in this informative and educational evening is $15.00 + HST per adult and $10.00 + HST per child (16 & under).

The Alderville First Nation Black Oak Savanna is situated on the edge of the Oak Ridges Moraine near the southern shores of Rice Lake. The area is home to the largest intact tract of native tallgrass prairie and oak savanna habitat left within the Rice Lake Plains. Learn about the conservation efforts used to maintain and protect this rare habitat and its biodiversity. Event offered in partnership with Alderville Black Oak Savanna and the Quinte Field Naturalists.

Learn to Fish Day

Join Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority‘s (GRCA) Watershed Biologist for a fun and educational morning learning how to fish. You’ll walk away knowing how to rig, bait and cast a fishing rod, identify local fish species, and fish safely and sustainably.
If you have your own fishing gear, please bring it; otherwise, equipment can be borrowed through Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunter’s TackleShare Program which will be on-site.

BOTANICAL WONDERS: Goodrich-Loomis Conservation Area

Living on the edge: The Ecology and Behaviour of Gray Jays in Algonquin Park

Although Canada Jays are common residents of our North American boreal forests, their natural history and ecology remains somewhat of a mystery, even to those that see them regularly. Using a combination of long-term data and recent experiments, I will discuss the year-round ecology of this fascinating and highly intelligent bird, including what factors influence their survival and reproductive success. I will also address why we have observed over a 50% decline of Gray Jays at the southern edge of their range and how this may be related to long-term changes in climate.
